Exploring Very Old Letters!

Time Flies!

So, much life things later I've managed to get this site complete enough to upload. Neat! I was unsure how to deal with the massive bio for Guðmundur, but I decided to just - do my best and let it be what it is, for now, so that I can get it done. I spent some time making an SVG generator so I could use sql instead of notepad to organize the events and timeline stuff, it looks nicer, but it isn't fully complete. I'd like to separate ranged events and single events, and maybe some separation between personal and non-personal events so they look a bit less cluttered, but I assume most things I get to write about won't have sagas attached to them, so it might not be needed.

I want to be a better writer in general, so writing the bio was both frustrating and fun, as I do not really have the skill to make it flow nicely, but it was at least improving with each draft. My Latin is also slowly improving, and I revised the translations a bit, and I figure I'll keep translation notes and changelogs in the future; might be helpful.

Hello Hello

I've gotten completely derailed by the rabbit hole that is Gudmund, or Guðmundur goði Arasonar. I was going to just type up a quick summary of him and his environment. Get some sense of the zeitgeist around him, and maybe some of the art, and architecture he would have seen. However; Gudmund has a saga.

I spent the rest of April reading and summarising the saga, and checking other sources and mentions. I also refined the translations a bit on his letters, and would love to see if I could find more of them. Still, delaying posting all of this for this massive biographic summary was kind of exhausting. I love falling into these kinds of rabbit holes, but when I started making maps of his travels in qgis I realized I'd keep finding new things to examine rather than finish and post it. I'd like to leave the option open to keep going into deeper dives, but I'd rather now just finish it enough to post, so I can get started~

Anyway, most people won't have these many sources, and leave me more time to try and show off the environment and other interesting things we know that could give us an impression of them and their time, and find some fun side tangents we can use to learn new things. Gudmund was just surprisingly deep, so to speak. Oh well~

I finally decided to just make myself a little project website! I've always liked messing around with this stuff, but felt I needed an excuse to make one. But, in an exercise in taking up space, being valid, and enjoying my hobbies - voila!

I've been poking and prodding latin on and off since I was a teen, but decided to just go for it last fall. Old letters, texts and so on have always fascinated me, and so many aren't fully translated, as they're not critical, I suppose. And I really like languages, so why not? So, this is my journey in learning latin and exploring neat old things! As well as trying to dig up some stories and zeitgeist about them.

I won't promise frequent updates~ This is a hobby, so I'm trying not to put any pressure on it, and accept that interests come and go, and if I don't feel shame about it ebbing and flowing, they seem to return quicker. I won't ramble for too long, but if you feel ashamed every time you see that thing you bought for your burst of inspiration and fun, it's going to suck the fun out of it. It's okay to just put things away until they're fun again! Have fun!
